2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

The Jeep Wrangler is going back to nature. The iconic open-air vehicle just got a little more friendly to the environment it is known for tackling. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) joins the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Jeep Compass 4xe (available in Europe this summer) to mark Jeep's turn to sustainable and eco-friendly vehicles. But don't let the 'electric' part fool you. This Jeep is just as capable and even more powerful than its gas-guzzling 4x4 siblings.

Some of the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe's impressive features include:

  • Turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine with
  • orqueFlight eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Two electric motors - one at the front of the gas engine, one at the front of the 8-speed

  • Total 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque
  • 400-volt, 17-kWh, 96-cell lithium-ion-nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack
  • Up to 25 miles full EV mode
  • Estimated 50 MPGe

The Jeep Wrangler 4x4 boasts 30-inches of water fording capability. But no need to worry about taking an electric vehicle in the water, the 4xe battery is mounted under the second-row seat and encased in an aluminum housing, to protect it from the elements (read: waterproof) as well as maximize interior space. The redesigned second-row seat allows you to flip the bottom cushion so you can easily access the battery.

Tailor your powertrain for specific drives with E Selec: three modes of operation including Hybrid, eSave and Electric. Hybrid is the default mode blending torque from the engine and electric motor. eSave mode saves battery life by utilizing the 2.0-liter engine and either using Battery Save or Battery Charge to maximize battery life for future use. Electric operates on 100% battery power until it is depleted, or you decide to add more torque, engaging the 2.0-liter engine. Not only can you do your daily commuting with zero emissions, but you can also go off-road in nearly complete silence. Useful when you're trying to become one with nature.

Take advantage of the lowest available electric rates with Eco Coaching Pages, a UConnect feature that monitors power flow, braking, driving history and provides detail of gas and electric usage. Regenerative braking helps prolong battery usage by generating electricity for the battery pack every time you press the brake pedal. Engage the Max Regen feature to slow down even faster and maximize the electricity generated.

The 4xe is still a Jeep first, though, and comes standard with Trail Rated running gear, 10.8-inches of ground clearance, solid front and rear Dana 44 axles, fully articulating suspension and a full-time 4x4 two-speed transfer case. The fact that it is electric actually makes it more powerful and even better at off-roading. The torque-on-demand electric power gives the driver instant torque and more control over their driving, great for crawling rock faces and climbing steep hills.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe will be available in a standard 4xe, Sahara 4xe and the off-road powerhouse, Rubicon 4xe. Visually, you won't notice any major changes from the traditional Jeep Wrangler, except by the exclusive Electric Blue accents on the exterior as well as the seats and trim panels (in the Rubicon 4xe trim) and of course, the new 4xe badge.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is just the latest in FCA's mission of becoming more sustainable and eco-friendly in the world of motor vehicles. We can expect more electrification in future Jeep models, but power and performance will never be sacrificed or compromised. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid offers a more powerful, controlled off-roading experience with the added benefit of great fuel economy and impressive electric-only range.
